The MS 171 is designed to be used for general garden maintenance tasks, such as general cutting and trimming, chopping firewood, or felling small trees.

Durable, intelligent design

STIHL have created this machine to last, and have included several features to help extend its longevity. it uses a pre-separation air filtration system to achieve noticeably longer filter life compared to conventional systems. It also benefits from the Ematic chain lubrication system, which provides maximum lubrication, longer wear and less oil consumption than conventional methods of chain lubrication, when used with STIHL OILOMATIC saw chains.

Simple, low-fatigue operation

Special catches on the oil and fuel tanks allow for easy opening of the filler caps without needing tools. This results in less hassle and spillages, as well as saving you time. Anti-vibration technology helps to reduce vibrations at the unit’s handles by dampening the engine oscillations, while all the machine’s important controls can be operated using a single lever – increasing operator comfort and ease of use. A side chain tensioner means you don’t have to touch the sharp saw chain to access the tensioning screw.

Excellent STIHL cutting performance

You have the choice of 12 inch / 30 cm or 14 inch / 35 cm bar lengths with this model. It uses a 3/8 inch P Pico Mino Micro 3 chain. This is backed up by advanced combustion technology, to provide high torque across a broad rpm range (as well as lower fuel consumption and efficient performance), and the compensator in the carburettor, which keeps the fuel/air ratio constant, and hence also the engine power.
